Welcome

Loretta Schumacher Carlson

Thank you for visiting my website. I’ve been telling stories as long as I can remember. I wrote my first original story in third grade, painstakingly composing it on a manual typewriter and presenting it to my favorite teacher. I’ve been filling notebooks with stories and story ideas ever since—although I’ve ditched the typewriter in favor of an iMac.

Over the years, I worried a lot about what I should do and my writing stalled—stopped, really—because I became paralyzed by all the advice I received:
• You should write every day.
• You should write 1,000 words every day.
• You should write while listening to a playlist tailored to your current story.
• You should write 1,000 words every day while listening to music and standing on your head.

Okay, so I made up that last one.

I piled one should on top of the other until I was crushed under the expectations. I’m finally learning that the only thing I should do is figure out what works for me. What keeps me writing? What do I love to read? Keep writing, and keep reading. Leave the Land of Should behind.

That revelation has freed me and started me down the path to writing young adult novels. I invite you to come along on the journey.

Wishing you a lifetime full of wonderful stories,

Loretta Schumacher Carlson
